I had strings, but now I’m free. There are no strings on me! – Avengers: Age of Ultron

This content may contain spoilers, so stop reading if you haven’t watched the movie.

Three years ago, Marvel kicked off their cinematic world by combining Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye in one film. The first Avengers was a huge success and became the highest-grossing of superhero film, third highest grossing film worldwide, and also the highest grossing film in 2012.This film also received extremely good reviews. 92% from Rotten Tomatoes and 69 from Metacritic. And obviously they will need to make a sequel to that film because it was so successful.

Avengers: Age of Ultron, the title for the sequel, begins with the team trying to retrieve Loki’s sceptre that was taken away by Hydra. After the team manage to retrieve back, the sceptre, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner found an artificial intelligence inside the sceptre and use it to create Ultron, a global defence program. What they did not know is that Ultron believes that he needs to eliminate humanity to save the Earth. As we can all imagine, the team gathered together to stop this catastrophy and was joined by three additional members, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Vision.

This movie has not been officially released in the United States, but so far it has received good reviews from movie critiques. Although, I would not say that I agree with those critiques. Avengers: Age of Ultron was an entertaining movie, but they lack funny punchline, bad editing, and flaws in the story plot.

During the first few minutes of the film, we will be introduced to new characters, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Super twins that gain their power through a scientific experiment. Quicksilver played by Aaron-Taylor Johnson have the power of super speed while his twin sister played by Elisabeth Olsen can manipulate minds and throw energy blast. It was extremely interesting to see Quicksilver in Marvel’s cinematic universe since there is another version of Quicksilver on X-men series. Aaron-Taylor Johnson was an incredible actor, and he did not receive as many screen time as he should have because he died in the movie. Maybe one of the many reason they need to kill him off is not to confuse people between this version of Quicksilver and X-men’s version of Quicksilver. Quicksilver supposed to possess the power of super speed, why can’t he just grab a shield to protect him from the bullet before protecting Hawkeye. Another disappointment from Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch was the use of fake Russian accent. This is the case of an epic failure, where casting director uses a different nationality actor to portrays another nationality. However, it is interesting how they give a different background story for these super twins as they are supposed to be Magneto’s children.

There are certain Thor’s fighting scene that looks like it has been badly CGI and edited. Specifically the fighting scene in the forest, before they retrieve the sceptre. The usage of editing in Thor’s scene was not as smooth as it is in any other scene. You can feel that it was being filmed in a CGI green screen room. The fact that you can feel the flaws in just 2 minutes of the film starting makes you feel that it is a total let down.

Ultron delivered an iconic line that was, “I’ve got no strings to hold me down, I had strings, but now I’m free!”. This line was originally from the movie Pinocchio, to represent him as a puppet without strings. This line can indicate that he is free from his creator, Tony Stark. He is now free from his string, which is from the control of Tony Stark, his “creator”. However, this is can be argued as untrue since Ultron only spend several minutes with Tony Stark. Ultron may just have inherited Tony Stark’s ego and was evil to begin with.

But, despite all the great effort to re-assemble the team, it is very hard to say that Age of Ultron has a very strong story line. One of the major plot twist in this film would probably be Hawkeye’s secret life. Hawkeye got a very reasonable screen time, and we finally were able to explore him as a character more. The film has shown a different side of him as we all now know that he is married and have two kids. To a certain degree, Hawkeye did steal the light from anyone else.

Overall, Avengers: Age of Ultron is a highly acceptable movie that has so much more potential. Nonetheless, the extra after credit scene where Thanos (Guardian of the Galaxy) retrieves the Infinity Gauntlet shows a strong possibility of combining these two movies.
